This will be an introduction to ensemble hand drumming on djembes (African hand drum). We will cover: The 3 basic strokes (bass, tone, slap); introductory rhythms from world music traditions; simple and fun ensemble pieces and arrangements; how to play (music) nicely with others; the universal break; improvisation and drum circle playing; integrating voice with drumming; body percussion and more!

This class is for those that already have some basic drumming and rhythm experience.
We will work on ensemble pieces from West Africa which incorporate multiple djembe parts, songs, dunduns (bass drums), and develop our ensemble playing skills. Also, in this class we will focus on developing interdependent coordination with our hands and feet. This series will also have a component about integrating Middle Eastern rhythms with African instruments, and will involve learning some chants which work well with Middle Eastern grooves.

This class will be an introduction to ensemble hand drumming on djembes (African hand drum). We will cover: The 3 basic strokes (bass, tone, slap); introductory rhythms from world music traditions; simple ensemble pieces and arrangements; the universal break; improvisation and drum circle playing; history of the djembe; explorations in 4/4; body percussion and more! This class is perfect for beginners and people that are still developing basic groove skills.

This class will focus on learning more complex West African ensemble pieces, with more sophisticated parts and arrangements. Also, we will continue to learn music from a variety of world music traditions, including Brazil and Cuba. We will also incorporate playing dununs (West African bass drums) in this course. There will also be opportunities to perform what we have learned in live community settings, such as Dia De Los Muertos. This course will be a mixed level class, a combination of advanced beginners and intermediate players, and will include playing a variety of percussion instruments in addition to djembes.

Explore the music / nature connection. 6 times a year we spend a day drumming in the open air and exult in playing rhythms in a beautiful outdoor location. We learn a variety of rhythms, and some songs and chants which go with them, that deepen our connection to the natural world surrounding us. No drumming experience needed-this is a beginner/intermediate mixed level class. Locations include Marin, San Francisco and East Bay.
CLASS HAPPENS RAIN OR SHINE! In case of rain, class will be held at a private residence near the mountain in Tiburon.
Pot luck: Bring a vegetarian food item to share. We will all share lunch together-more info on this once registered.
